Every December, the J Walter Thompson (JWT) marcom agency tries to imagine 100 things that will become popular in the new year. It's a fascinating list and I thought it would be interesting to highlight the ideas that could impact job search in 2011 and beyond. Location, location, location how to improve your chances of finding a graduate job A little known-fact about UK graduates: once they leave University they are geographically immobile. In 2015/16 once students left Uni, 58% remained in the area they studied in with 69% returning to the region they were living previously. Only 18% of graduates went to work somewhere they werenât already connected to. (*) The reasons for this are understandable: Graduates not yet sorted with a job or further study option may migrate to live back home, at least to start with Some will have forged ties in the local area and friends may remain, making house and flat shares possible Some graduates may be local and may already have been living at home while they studied The financial situation of many will mean heading homewards is the inevitable first step after graduation In the University of Warwickâs case, many graduates come from London and the South East and this is where many graduate jobs can be found However, here are some factors to bear in mind if you find yourself still seeking a graduate job, if youâve recently graduated or if you are a finalist contemplating your next steps when you graduate next summer. 1) Not all graduate jobs are in London. From a national perspective, whilst the most popular places are in London and the South East with the majority choosing to work there, in 2015 UK graduates also found work in Birmingham (4,155), Manchester (3,740), Leeds (3,430), Glasgow (3,105), Lancashire 2680), Edinburgh (2,475), Oxfordshire (2,200), Liverpool (2,170), Belfast 2,110), Bristol (2,080) and Cardiff (2,075). 2) Itâs likely that competition for posts outside London and the South East may therefore have less competition for places. Larger graduate recruiters who have regional offices often complain that they find it harder to fill graduate jobs outside London organisations will still offer the same support and development opportunities. A number of regional and local Law firms will offer training contract opportunities, for example. 3) Not all graduates work for big business or on large training schemes. In 2015 35% of graduates went to work for companies with fewer than 250 employees, with 1 in 5 of these with fewer than 50 employees. So if working for a large corporate is not your thing then extend your job search to explore a wider range of opportunities in small to medium firms (SMEs). 4) The cost of living outside the capital are significantly less. While London salaries may appear to pay more (London weighting) itâs worth comparing rental costs in different places to see the stark differences to how far your salary is likely to go. If you donât have ties to a specific area, why not explore the opportunities available in other regions that youâd be willing to consider. Many areas in the UK have good transport links and so you can travel to see family and friends from most places. What other attractions might different areas offer? Scenic beauty, proximity to outdoor activities and sports facilities, good shopping opportunities and culture all exist outside the capital. 5) There are clusters of different kinds of employment in different areas and regions. If you want to work for large corporate organisations then youâre likely to find these within large city conurbations. There wonât be much call for Management Consultants in the Outer Hebrides, for example. Manchester (Salford) and Leeds are pretty up and coming areas for independent TV and Film currently. Cardiff has always been a creative hub for the BBC (âDoctor Whoâ and associated programmes). Scotland has its own strong media industry too. There are over 40 games companies in Leamington Spa, or âSilicon Spaâ as itâs otherwise known. Itâs the 3rd biggest gaming âclusterâ in the UK Over 70% of games companies are based outside London (source: UK Interactive Entertainment annual report 2017). In summary: When making decisions about your future, keep an open mind about where you might start your graduate career Geography may, of necessity be your starting point. If you need to live in a specific location, whatever the reason, explore the kinds of job available to you as this may in reality determine what you can/canât do Do the math. Compare earnings in the capital alongside the cost of renting and travel with comparable roles and living and travel costs elsewhere in the UK Consider your needs as a human being, not just as a graduate seeking work. What else do you need in order to feel fulfilled and content in life? What degree of work-life balance do you want? What kind of environment would you flourish in both in and out of work? Guest Post Everything In Its Place Creating Calm in Your Office Space A well-organized desk is a thing of beauty This is a guest post by Jessica Johnson Have you ever wasted an hour searching for an email or a Word document you know you saved on your computer but it just wont turn up? Or maybe youve gone to print out a file, only to discover that youre out of ink and you cant find that extra cartridge youre sure you bought just last month. Knowing where things are when you need them is one of the most important keys to working efficiently. (Swearing that you know where everything is, while staring through two-foot stacks of paperwork on your desk doesnt count.) Organization is everything if you want to be really productive. To streamline your workday, its important to remove the clutter from your physical work space, from your computer, and from your mind. Fortunately, it will take just an hour or two of legwork to make a fresh start. Do it now! Youll save endless hours in the long run. Declutter Your Desktop Is your computers desktop a jumbled mess of dozens of icons? If your default place to save files is onto your desktop, yet you never sort these into folders, make a commitment to change this immediately. As a bonus, that amazing vacation or family photo you lovingly chose for your screen image will finally be visible. Start by creating four or five top-level folders. These will be the only icons on your desktop. Here are the ones I use: ⢠Work â" Within this folder, there are folders named for current clients and projects. ⢠Pictures â" I sort within this folder by year, month and subject. ⢠Music/Movies I regularly move files from this folder to an external hard drive to save space. ⢠Dropbox â" This cloud-syncing tool is invaluable to me, and its where I keep any projects Im actively working on, before moving them to the Work folder to file away. Get a free account here: www.dropbox.com. Now, itâs just a question of dragging the files on your desktop into the folder they correspond to. And if you dont have time right now to sort them, create one folder called Old Desktop, drag everything into it, and sort it out later. Youd be amazed what having a clean desktop can do for your productivity and attitude on the job. Organize Your Email Take a similar approach with email. Create folders where you can store emails and reference them without storing them perpetually in your inbox. The goal should be to end each day with a clean inbox (or close to it.) And its okay to cheat with a folder called Needs Immediate Attention! if you just want to clear out your inbox and deal with a few emails the next day. Clean Up Your Workspace Its amazing what a difference a few pieces of hardware can do for cleaning up a cluttered desk. Start with these key components: A charging station â" The primary culprit of todays cluttered desks, even for the hyper organized, are cords and wires. Purchase a surge-protecting power strip big enough to handle all of your hard drives and plugs, and then tuck these wires out of the way with clips or a well-placed nail. Shelving or drawers â" If you dont have a place to put something, it will end up on your desk or on the floor. Build or purchase enough drawer and shelf space so that everything has a place. Then, put speakers and hard drives in places where the cords can be out of the way. A Cleaning caddy â" Dust thats allowed to build up can make a work station nasty, whether its grime between the keys on your computer, a thin layer across your computer screen, or full-fledged dust bunnies under your desk. Get a small bucket or caddy that can hold a few lint-free cloths or rags, a brush, some window and surface cleaner, cotton swabs, and a can of compressed air. Keep it on hand; if you dont have to go searching for the things you need to clean, youre far more likely to clean on a regular basis and stay one step ahead of the grime. Calm Your Mind Do you have a way to unwind during the work day? The stress of constantly shifting between projects, taking phone calls, answering emails, and trying to actually accomplish something can take a toll on anyone. If you work from home or have your own office, get a comfy chair or collection of pillows where you can sit back for a few minutes and read something unrelated to work, or simply close your eyes and focus on your breathing. This is more difficult for employees in a large or communal office environment, but a good pair of comfy noise-blocking headphones can allow for five to ten minutes of relaxation time before tackling your next project. How to Avoid Networking That Goes Nowhere Mobilizing your network during a job search is a lot of work with many ups and downs. People donât always react to your requests for guidance and information as youd like them to, and many report learning who their friends really are during a search.After coaching hundreds of job search clients, Iâve seen pretty much every networking interaction possible. Sometimes the people you most expect to help you donât, and total strangers are incredibly open and giving. The earlier you identify the âtag linesâ of people you come into contact with while networking, the faster you will be able to reframe how they can help you, and course correct in order to get the most mileage out of your contacts. Here are the most common things people who you try to network with will say.1. I need to reschedule our meeting. This contact commits to a meeting, but then reschedules several times because hes overwhelmed by other responsibilities. When dealing with this type, suggest meeting at an event you know he will be attending; perhaps grabbing a few minutes at a conference you will both be attending, or offering to stop by his office 15 minutes before his first appointment.2. Iâm unhappy in my own job. Your efforts to network are usually thwarted by her complaints about her own situation. Unfortunately, this can happen when you network with colleagues at a company where you were recently downsized, or when you are talking to someone in an industry experiencing contraction. Try to be empathic and offer some sort of advice to help. Then steer the conversation toward how your contact can help you.3. Iâm not comfortable sharing my contacts with you. Maybe the person doesnât say this outright, but itâs obvious she is reluctant to give up any names of contacts because she is protective of her network and very concerned with their opinion of her. Or perhaps she doesnât know you well enough to feel she can share this information or vouch for your skills. Remind her that y ou recognize her contacts donât necessarily know of any open jobs. Stress that you are just trying to meet people who can share valuable information about an industry, job function, or company to help validate your search targets. By lowering the expectation, you may be able to convince her that an introduction carries no risk.4. I donât know how I can help you. She often says something like, âI donât know how I can help you; all my contacts are in industry X and you are looking for people in industry Y.â Remind her that you are not only interested in what her contacts do, but who they know in other industries and can introduce you to.5. Just tell me who you want to meet. This contact only wants to help if you can tell him specifically who you want an introduction to. Try to reframe the âaskâ by saying something like, âIâm not limiting myself to a specific contact; Iâm interested in meeting anyone in the healthcare industry with a VP title or above in marketing.â 6. Let me get back to you. He claims he knows several people and is willing to make introductions. But when you follow up with him you hear nothing. Try one or two additional outreaches. If that doesnât work, seek out others with similar profiles who may be more receptive to your request.7. Feel free to post your resume to our company website. This contact immediately refers you to the companyâs online job posting portal. They genuinely think they are helping you. Educate them by saying, âThank you, but in my experience HR departments are inundated with candidates; Iâm trying to get in front of the hiring manager so I can have a meaningful conversation about the value I can add.â8. Give me your resume, and I will see what I can do. Heâs the guy who says, âGive me your resume and I will send it to our HR department.â He thinks he is helping and following company protocol. But unless HR is hiring for someone with your exact skill set right now, the chances of them re sponding are low. Tell your contact that in your experience HR is generally a gatekeeper and you are trying to get in front of a decision maker.9. No response at all. You call, you email, you send a message via LinkedIn, but hear nothing. When you encounter this situation, reach out to others who know the contact to see if you can find out why she hasnât been responsive or to ask if they would be willing to reach out to her on your behalf. If you still hear nothing, move on. It may be that this person isnât willing to help.Part of your networking strategy will be to educate your contacts on how they can help you. But you will also meet people who get it right on the first try and provide invaluable leads. And ultimately, you will meet that person who actually has an open job and wants to fill it with you. He exists, but you often have to meet many of the others who put up roadblocks before you get to him.Remember, a job search is a marathon, not a sprint. You will go down many p aths that lead to nothing and meet many people who wonât be able to help you land that next job. But only by exploring all paths can you find the gems in your network who can help you get to the finish line faster.
